Welcome to our look ahead to racing at Caulfield on Saturday 29 June 2024. The forecast is for a Good 4 track, although with a few showers around on the day we might see that move to a Soft 5. The rail is +12m for the entire circuit, with an early strong northerly wind shifting to the west in the early afternoon. Runners will either have the wind in their face down the side or down the straight when it swings, so we will be looking for on-pace runners who can hopefully find some cover.
We will commence early in the day with a look at Race 2, Sportsbet Bet With Mates Handicap (1100m), and Miss Icelandic having her first start for Gavin Bedggood.
We like the look of this Deep Field mare over the Caulfield 1100m, where she has one win from one start. She typically comes to hand pretty quickly with a 50% strike rate first up, loves the distance with two wins from three starts, and four wins from eight starts on a good track.
Miss Icelantic jumps from barrier 2, and we are hoping that the likes of Mrs Chrissie and South Of Houston give some cover until getting out in the straight. We are happy to take on the current favourite in Kin who has drawn relatively wide and will be settling near the back of the field.
Race 5, Sportsbet Feed Handicap (1200m), looks to be a lottery with most of the early money drawn very wide. We will be looking to have an each-way play on Diamond Decorator and hoping that the filly can bounce back from her seventh place finish this track and distance earlier in the month.
She jumps from barrier 4 and with a bit of speed inside, she might get the one out, one back sit that we think she will need on Saturday. Her numbers do no look that great on paper, but she is an honest horse who can make her own luck up on the speed.
If we need to find a win late in the day, Chorlton Lane (IRE) looks the goods in Race 10, Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1440m). He looks a deserved favourite, ticking all the boxes at the track, distance, and going. Barrier 5 should give him a nice sit around midfield, Celine Gaudray keeps the ride after their last start win over this track and distance. We will be looking for him to hit the line late.
Enjoy the day and happy punting.
